BIO:

Trevor Novak is a visual artist based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He grew up in Toronto, Ontario and received an Advanced Diploma in Ceramics from Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario (2015) and a BFA in Ceramics from NSCAD University in Halifax, Nova Scotia (2017).

His art practice is focused on sculptural and digital creations that reflect the real and imagined worlds he lives in. This blending of realities exists both as context for his work and in the material languages he engages in. At the centre of his practice is a desire to make people laugh, and through light hearted imagery introduce the viewer to deeper, more uncomfortable subject matter.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

The sculptural work I create revolves around narrative and myth. Both historical  and mythological narratives influence my work and the figures I create live somewhere in between these two. I make work that reflects the ambiguity that exists between our true past and history and the myths that surround our daily lives. By exploring the ambiguous nature of these two things I hope to raise questions about how we view history through a black and white, or right versus wrong, lens.

The figures that I make evolve throughout the process of their creation. From conception, to drawing, to clay they are constantly changing and adapting based on what I’m thinking in the moment. By working this way much of my own personality comes through my hands into the figures without my mind getting in the way. My work is often rude, ridiculous and silly; this is an extension of myself, and I feel like my work is most successful when it brings a smile to someone’s face at first glance.
